One number decides how a diamond looks, and it isn't carat. Cut is what throws the light back at you, so a well-cut half-carat outshines a dull full carat and costs less. Max out cut first, then decide how much size you're buying with what's left.

The rest of the money hides in grades the eye can't read. Color down to G or H still looks white once it's set. Clarity at VS2 looks clean to the eye, and an eye-clean SI1 saves a little more, though SI1 doesn't always come clean, so study the photos first. Buy just under the magic sizes, 0.9 instead of a full 1.0, and you pocket a premium nobody can see.

Run that exact spec at two windows before you spend a dollar.
