- 2. The trace. Can't take the ring out of the house? Trace the inside circle with a sharp pencil, twice, on a clean sheet. A jeweler can estimate closely from the drawing, and a caliper measurement of the inside width is even better. It takes under a minute with the ring in your hand.
- 3. The plastic sizer. Many online jewelers mail free plastic sizers. Useful when you can test a borrowed ring at home instead of explaining a jewelry-store errand.
- 4. The gift. Buy her an inexpensive fashion ring because you saw it and thought of her. How it fits tells you the ballpark, and the errand explains itself.
- 5. The middle-finger rule. If you can only borrow a ring from her middle finger, size down about half a size for the ring finger. It's an estimate, so pair it with the beads below as your safety net.

If the finished ring runs big
